When the world’s leading manufacturer of medical products made from fish oil – Norwegian company Pronova BioPharma – needed to build a new production facility, expectations were high and time was short.
The outcome is a capacity increase that will lead the company into the future.
In the pharmaceutical industry, when market demand for a product suddenly exceeds supply, something has to be done – and quickly. That was the situation Pronova BioPharma faced as demand for its leading product, Omacor, began to grow in the American market and elsewhere.

Fast-track approach without compromise
Getting a new production facility up and running within a tight timeframe was key to Pronova BioPharma’s ability to step up supply. The company looked for a partner who could commit to completing the project in Denmark four to six months faster than if it had chosen to locate the facility in another relevant location, such as Belgium.
The company chose NNE Pharmaplan for its expertise in establishing pharmaceutical facilities quickly – without compromising the security and quality of complicated production and regulatory compliance processes. NNE Pharmaplan is providing a complete range of services for this fast-track project, from conceptual design to construction management and qualification.
Meeting demand and expanding markets
The new GMP-compliant facility will convert omega-3 fish oil from sardines and anchovies to Omacor, a medicine used after heart attack and for reducing increased fat in the blood. The product is being marketed in more than 30 countries worldwide.
The new facility will double production of this innovative product, giving Pronova BioPharma the ability to meet increasing demand. The facility will also be ready in time to help the company meet another key goal – entering the Japanese market in the near future.
